Yes the grooves are to catch and gather the juices as well as be decorative. I believe the design is a pineapple - I have a pewter platter with the same design and was told this by the southern women who gave it to me. The pineapple was a sign of hospitality and welcoming in the South (don't know the origin though)perhaps in the 1800's.
