New Year New Frontier

January slipped into a Midwestern pub with snow on her shoes, a sweaty pint of craft beer, and a rock and roll band.

She was surrounded by love too.

The midnight hour was a collection of reflections in dew, strumming & keys, should do's and might haves and gratitude and apprehensions and absences, wishes written on steam.

Stream of song and string lights dancing into a next day called 2016.

And then a lot of things happened. More things to add to the things happening already.

Things like our car's engine shaft suddenly snapping on a busy highway in West Virginia as we drove home from our holiday in Wisconsin. My awesome job suddenly snapping out from under me in a lay off my first day back from holiday. And the following day, my mom admitted into the hospital for the third time in as many weeks.

Our car was fixed, mostly, and at great expense.

My mom was discharged from the hospital after a week of chemo treatment. She is feeling considerably better still.

And that job, well, there is no fix. Very simply, it is gone.

I have been laid off once before.

I was in my late 20's, working for a music agency in San Francisco, expected to lie to the legendary Mavis Staples over the phone about her next paycheck.

It was a pretty rotten job and I was quite relieved to be sprung from it.

I loved my most recent occupation of three years. I learned a lot and looked forward to each day. It was a great outlet for my creativity. It was a crafty company with talented co-workers. My boss was very flexible about the demands of my other jobs as mother, doula, AND daughter to an aging parent. It was a fine fit in so very many ways.

I didn't think I would be there forever, but I also didn't expect it to end so soon.

Unlike the music industry job, there was no sense of relief when I was let go.

Just the stages of grief.

And snowfall. Almost 20 inches in two days.

A blank slate on which to etch a fresh story, a deep space of soft landings, a powdery  shapelessness followed by growing solidification, an invitation to tumble and trundle

Now emerging from sooty slush and slippery black ice, there are clear surfaces in sight and windows of opportunity reflecting light.

A full moon wanes into darkness and stirs new life. Gestation anticipates fruition. Tributaries fatten with run off as roots tingle. We witness the big tease of thaw & freeze flirting.

Imbolc approaches and it is time to fire up every last
candle so that nothing is left but new beginnings.

work wednesday

oh oh. i forgot my camera. so the before, during and after posts will have to be verbal this week. to give you an idea what my work wednesdays are like. hmmmmm, i guess i can use some extra photos from last week!

:: before ::

rise at 6:30am with the baby. nurse. pull on clothes and brush teeth while dan burps the baby. change the baby's diaper & damp clothing. make tashi's lunch while dan holds the baby. nurse. eat pbj on toast. change diaper again. drive to work with baby while listening to wtju, wnrn or 106.1 the corner. spend far too long looking for parking while the baby starts to whimper. walk half a mile once parking is found, wearing baby and carrying two big bags. observe the buildings, the trees, the students, the trash, the gardens, the businesses. kiss my baby's head. crave chai, but skip it.

:: during ::

put tristan in the bouncy seat while i turn on computer, get his sleeping area set up, fill my cup with water and wolf down a banana. nurse while checking email. change diaper. put tristan down on the lambswool for a nap. work like crazy while he naps. hope that he naps for three hours. if he doesn't, live with it. if he doesn't, bounce him on my knee, nurse, sway, kiss his cheeks -- while working all the while. sit on the floor with him if stuffing envelopes or reading documents. change diaper. bring him wide awake to a meeting but it's ok because he does nothing but smile. nurse some more. put him in the sling so that he falls asleep again. work. eat lunch. work. distract him when he wakes up again so i can continue to work. hand him off to eager arms. work. glance at facebook. work. prepare for departure as it's time to pick tashi up from school.

:: after ::

walk back to the car with lighter bags because lunch has been consumed and diapers have been used. observe the buildings, the trees, the students, the trash, the gardens, the businesses. sense tristan drifting into another nap. drive to tashi's school and hang out in pick up line way too long while baby gets restless and starts to whine. tashi jumps into car and makes both tristan and i smile. run errands, hang out at a cafe, visit a thrift store or drive straight home. if lucky, follow horses.

country moment

even though the baby slept for eight hours straight last night, i somehow managed to go to bed late. he awoke this morning for a 6am nursing, kicked and cooed for about an hour, and now lies blissfully asleep as i consider baking cinnamon rolls! someday i will catch up on my sleep, but right now, the rare moment of quietude and possibility can't be avoided! a cacophony of birds urges me to begin the day.

this last week marked my return to work with baby in tow. simultaneously i came across this article on mothering.com. it helped to boost my confidence. things went quite well, really. tristan had good stretches of sleep in the sling both days i was in the office. tashi did a great job of entertaining him while he was awake. we nursed and visited co-workers when restlessness set in. there were a few high stress moments. we're just going to have to learn how to navigate those. it helped when i brought in a standing lamp on my second day, so i could turn off the overhead fluorescent lights. phew.

free time is rare now. i also have to put in work hours from home. so many things that have already fallen to the wayside slip even further out of reach (remember that baby mobile i was making? hahahahaha). we will find our routine and some sort of balance. and i will really have to learn how to prioritize things (like maybe i should read some poetry before bed rather than clicking through everyone's facebook status?). but for now, i'll take advantage of the 6am wakings, so i can eek out a blog entry, bake cinnamon rolls and perhaps leaf longingly through some sewing books.

off to the kitchen!
