considering balance as autumn equinox approaches

as much as i was holding on to summer, i have to admit, the autumn season brings a satisfying order. we are much better at organizing our days and getting out of the house, at least most of the time. and i am far more prone to focusing on crafts and walks (rather than picnics and swimming) to enliven our days. yesterday we got ourselves into our woods.

it had been a while, really. there were changes. areas of tall grass that arose after the abundant summer rains. large fallen branches that had been precariously propped up by surrounding trees lay shattered on the forest floor. and our little "beach" and wading area along the creek had taken on a new shape altogether.

it was temperate and dry with exquisite light falling and rolling back at repeat intervals. no humidity. no rumbles of an impending storm. a great sense of ease in the outdoor world.

we gathered pods and acorns and bark and bits of forest and returned to our deck to fashion a mobile. tristan was frustrated with the project and proclaimed it "stupid," but i knew he would be pleased with the end result.

it hangs in the middle of our living room, dancing through the days with us, seeking balance as autumn equinox approaches. seeking balance, as we all must.

it makes tristan jump with joy!

all the beautiful back lighting (and living room clutter) made it very difficult to photograph!

inspiration was found here.

i really love how it is a constant reminder of the need for balance. i hope to bring my family relationships, home life, and creativity back into balance this autumn season. summer was full of distraction and distance, even though we were all very close together much of the time. autumn is the season to gather together, to collect the autumn harvest, to cook, create, feast, and celebrate. and my mother is moving here from michigan! i look forward to each of these days, the opening of the busy but productive field.

what do you hope to bring in balance as the equinox approaches?
as the light balances with the dark, it is an amazing opportunity to adjust your intentions!

celebrating the seasons: creating cozy

yesterday and today are hot and humid again, though mostly overcast and a bit bleak. but earlier in the week we had some truly chilly weather. dan chopped up a fallen cedar he found in the woods (wow, it smelled good), and we fired up the wood stove for the first time this season.

there has been a lot more indoor play, blocks and puzzles are finding a new life. crayons and sketch pad and stacks of library books. we spotted a bear on our road yesterday, so indoors seems fine right now!

the rug tristan is sitting on i found for $10 at a yard sale. a nice addition i'd say.

but i'm looking forward to more of that chill. so we can keep those fires going. i love the flicker and crackle. the particular warmth and light a live fire casts across a room.

outside brother autumn continues to spread a blanket of acorns and leaves across our yard. below are some photos of a lovely seasonal garland our friend and playgroup host made with her family. the big leaves are magnolia. i think we'll give this a try with some finds from our yard.

celebrating the seasons: at home on autumn equinox

we had a pretty low key autumn equinox weekend. there was a soccer game, a musical jam, playground time, a date for dan and i, tree climbing, and a downtown stroll.

at home we we enjoyed some family time at the table, had a tea party on the deck per tristan's request, and each drew an animal card for the coming season per tashi's request. suffice it to say i have two dragon children!

i made a small rista with our tiny, potent thai peppers, while thinking good thoughts for the months to come. we have it hanging by our nature shelf.

the recent photo book i put together (for free! thank you, shutterfly) arrived on equinox morning, a great time to review our summer months.

there were also some large critters that visited us. 'tis the era of the super bugs!

there will certainly be much autumnal appreciation to come. how did you spend your weekend?

sunday round up

the camellias are blooming

our neighbor horse (nickname: sparky) was moved to the closest pasture along our road. we like this because it is almost as if we have a horse pet. the grass is so good in that pasture that he ignored me when i came by with a bag full of apple slices .

autumn. yes autumn. i love it. yet it is so bittersweet.

yesterday i went to a nice baby shower. great food, friendly people, and an awesome mama to be.

also yesterday, tristan had his first meal of solid food. he has recently attempted to intercept our food and drink before it reaches our mouths. that, combined with the looks of extreme longing and envy he gives us when we eat, convinced me it was time to give him some tastes. i mooshed up a wee bit of banana and mixed a little breastmilk in. i think he was pleased, what do you think?

today i am feeling a little blue. i'm not sure why. could it be the seasonal change? talks of escalating war in afghanistan? too much flu, too many ticks? sadness for those who have lost babies? fatigue? the weekend concluding too soon? miserable dreams? my own babies growing too fast?

i can't quite pin point it. thus, i will bake. when feeling sad, make a coffee cake i say. onward. . .

signs of the season

perhaps the first sign would be the blues i've been experiencing lately. as much as i love autumn, the growing darkness is not just external.

on our walk the other day, signs of the season were bountiful. walks in nature are a great way to let the light in, even if overcast.

i thought i'd share some photos. . .

free form friday: in which i welcome the fall

aaaautumn. it is whispering its way through the forest and into our home.

i feel it slipping through unsealed windows. i see it in the leaves beginning to change. i feel it like a cold hand, a warm shawl, murmurs from the grave, alchemical shifts in the fire.

it is a time of harvest stew, mugs of hearty drink and fresh baked delights.

my late august birthday is a personal shift in season. our wedding anniversary falls around equinox. it is time to face the years' renewal and to remind oneself of commitments.

there are so many things i love about autumn. it is sensory in such a different way than other seasons. spring is aural, summer is flesh. but autumn is wrapped up in the threads of memory, the urge to follow one's quest, the necessity of survival. it heightens the urge to work with yarn & fabric, pen & papyrus, a large pile of unread texts. and so i toast a steaming mug to autumn, pull my hat over my ears and hold my babies close. because the lasting warmth is that which we find in each other.

an exquisite beginning

august started with fridays after five, one of its better nights this summer. the opening band, a male female duo called birdlips, performed thoughtful, melodic, quirky, celestial songs. they were like the exact antithesis of the white stripes. they had a haunting, sometimes elfin lilt, that walks one through inward meadows of the wild.

during the break between bands we ate some really good food at the box. i highly recommend it. the prices are hella reasonable and you have all these great choices of sauces and skewers and add ons for a variety of noodles. the scallion crepes topped with asian slaw were perfect as an opener. tashi was quite content with her skewer of seasoned shrimp served with plain & simple cellophane noodles.

the second band at fridays after five was larry keel and natural bridge. i'd have to say this was the best bluegrass show i've witnessed since moving to a place where the banjo-is-often. it was well balanced, not too twangy, but still traditional. larry keel spun shards of good energy and the band continually aligned with the stars.

so it was a festive friday, indeed.

saturday had a blissful start as i was given the gift of hanging out with baby aurora while her cool mama taught yoga. tashi and i proudly carried aurora into the new milano. i nibbled at a tantalizing waffle served with juicy berries (just $3!) while dancing with baby amongst the rich furnishings of an italian villa. aurora fell asleep on my shoulder, which is the ultimate honor. she awoke as we perused the farmer's market and she gave tashi and i some of the biggest smiles we've ever seen come across her wee moon face.

later that day we drove tashi off to a sudden overnight with her friend. sudden overnight means sudden datenight. dan and i had no idea what to do, as there didn't seem to be a single interesting thing happening in town. so we drove out of town, out to the blue mountain brewery, where we had a beer tasting while gazing at sunset play across blue ridge.

dark hollow bourbon barrel stout wins, hands down.

after that we drove off to uncle charlie's in crozet where a band called basshound was playing. i didn't know what to expect, but my curiosity was sufficiently piqued after listening to their tracks on myspace.

my friends in ann arbor will understand what i mean when i say they approximated the cloud nine experience.

the major difference being, basshound is just four musicians. and they pull some really odd covers, songs one would normally not want to hear covers of: zz top's cheap sunglasses, steeley dan's josie, david bowie's let's dance.

but the thing that they did was, they brought the songs to an entirely new level, turning each into a sweat house of stomping rhythm.

when i awoke this morning, it was followed by this:

and this:

and later, more of this:

also, despite the risk of black lung, we purged and rearranged our basement. we now have a pile of total junk under our deck, moldy, broken, crappy stuff, that even freecyclers won't touch. but in the basement, one no longer walks into a death trap of inaccessible items smooshed haphazardly together. everything is carefully arranged, and the center of the basement is open -- wide open -- as it hasn't been since we
moved in.

these first few days of august center around lughnasadh, the first of the ancient celtic harvest holidays. it is a time to feast on the fruits of the first harvest, dance, celebrate the earth, play games late into night, and clean out the root cellar, so sealed jars of summer's bounty can be stored away for winter.

this weekend was such a nice start.

wishing fresh food for your table, spells of stargazing, a sudden urge to dance and great stores of space in your heart, as the harvest season pulls us forward.
